Opportunities and obstacles regarding tokenization
By Alex Bausch, Chairman at 2Tokens
The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs commissioned 2Tokens to analyze the impact of tokenization on society. This analysis assesses the legal, operational, and ecosystem aspects of tokenization, comparing them to other European nations. It underscores the opportunities and challenges of tokenization, its economic implications, and the viability of the Netherlands as a base for related activities. The EU sandbox offers great insight on what is required for adoption. The lessons learned from the dialogue meetings in the EU Regulatory sandbox and how this affects doing business in web3 are pivotal.

By Marjolein Geus, Partner at Bird & Bird
During a sequence of preparatory sessions, critical assumptions and unresolved questions were initially identified with the consortium partners. These discussions were under the expert supervision of Bird & Bird, appointed by the European Commission to oversee this exploration. These collaborative efforts aim to clarify and address the complexities of blockchain applications within current regulatory frameworks.
Explanation European Sandbox Use Case
By Meindert Jansberg, Co-Founder at Assetblocks
Assetblocks is a renewable energy company that manages the entire lifecycle of energy systems and decentralized asset distribution. Its mission is to own, invest in, and maintain renewable energy projects, using tokenized securities for financing. These include both equity and debt, allowing both professional and non-professional investors to buy tracking stock in Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) representing renewable sources like wind, solar, and battery storage. Ownership is confirmed through Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) with blockchain smart contracts as the primary register. All issuances comply with MiFID II regulations.
Panel Discussion
By Marjan van der Plas (Rabobank), Duncan Bloem (ABN AMRO), Meindert Jansberg (Assetblocks), Bird&Bird, Moderator: Olivier Rikken, Board Member at 2Tokens
The focus of the discussions centered on the role and challenges faced by banks concerning tokenized securities and stablecoins. Key questions addressed included whether banks are permitted to hold stablecoins, cryptocurrencies, and tokenized assets such as crypto assets and NFTs on their balance sheets, both in a custodial capacity and for transaction fees (gas fees). Is this feasible, and if so, how can it be implemented? This presentation will share some of the key insights and lessons learned from these discussions.
